DiTommaso Real Estate Agency awards Scholarships

The Coldwell Banker DiTommaso Real Estate Firm is happy to announce the success of its second annual education scholarship contest.

The Ditommaso firm, a member of the world renowned Coldwell Banker  Realty Network, recently awarded three seventh and eighth grade students an education scholarship each for successfully participating in a contest that would, once again, stress the importance of their educational future.

The first, second, and third place winners took home a $500, $250, and $100 scholarship respectively; toward their school’s tuition.  The students had to respond in typewritten form by composing a poem or letter expressing their appreciation to our soldiers in Iraq.

The students were given a two month period to compose their original and well thought out expressions.  Upon receipt of all entries, the judging committee, a panel of 21 sales agents and staff, met to begin the judging process.  The judges diligently read through 250 entries.  ‘The thoughts and expressions by the students were remarkable” said office manager, Robert Martino.  “You could see how appreciative the students really are.” As for broker, Frank DiTommaso, “It was very exciting to see the staff read through the entries and judge them.  Some of them said they felt like teachers grading school projects.  You could see how they really enjoyed being part of the event.”

STUDENTS EXPRESSIONS

“You are an example for all the world to see and thank.  I hope it makes you a little happier knowing that there are many who believe in you and thank you very much for all you do.”

You’ve seen many things people should never see, like people getting hurt and many casualties.  You may feel alone, like no one is there, I want you to know that people do care.”

‘I am so lucky for people so brave, and for all of our lives they are trying to save.”

Committee Decision

After carefully reading and discussing all the entries, the committee decided once again that an additional winner should be added.  As for our office administrator, Cecelia Olsen, “There were so many well written expressions that it made it difficult to narrow it down to only two winners.  So we decided that it was just easier to add one more winner.
The entire committee felt that it was the right thing to do.”  In addition to the award winners, four others were recognized as honorable mentions.

The first place winner was Briana Marino, a seventh grade student at St. Patrick’s school.  Second place was awarded to Christopher Ryan, an eighth grade student at Our Lady Star of the Sea.  Third place was awarded to Kasi Pierno, a seventh grade student at Our Lady Queen of Peace.

The honorable mentions were:  Anthony Bergen Jr. of St. Patrick’s, Alexa Marino of Our Lady Queen of Peace, Nicolette Kroczynski of Blessed Sacrament, and Anthony McCue of Our Lady Help of Christians.

The judges on the Contest committee were:  Geraldine Appollonio, Richie CoFrancesco, Annette Bernabe, Nikki Borriello, Anthony Billuos, Michele DeSio, Beatrice Karbowski, Joseph Errichiello, Sam Shafir, Victor Sedaros, Vickie Rekoutis, Mary Panetta, Cecelia Olsen,  Rosemarie Carrozza, Laura Candrilli, Maria DeMartino, Christine Lonergan, Carol Jacobson, Maria Fazzalaro, and Pamela Palermo.

As a special presentation the students had the honor of two guest speakers from “Staten Island Supports our Soldiers Resource Center,” Cathy Dilorio and Christine Delisa.

These two women who are also mothers of wounded soldiers shared some insight from their experiences of how things really are overseas.  They discussed how the soldiers lived their lives dangerously everyday by sacrificing their lives for the freedom of our country.  They also mentioned that more importantly than receiving food and gifts were the letters of appreciation to the soldiers because often times they feel lonely and forgotten.  The women graciously accepted a package of over 250 letters that will be forwarded through their organization to our soldiers in Iraq.  The students were very happy to know how appreciated their efforts were.

Supporting the students were their parents, principals, and teachers.  Sister Mary Ferro, principal of St. Patrick’s School and Mrs. Fran Pinto 7th grade teacher at Our Lady Queen of Peace attended the ceremony which was held at The Historic Old Bermuda Inn.
